Long-time resident  of the artists’ colony at Woodstock, New York, Ivan Summers came to Charleston in 1925 to serve as the director of the art school held at the Gibbes (replacing  previous director and fellow Woodstock colonist, Alfred Hutty). Summers taught classes during the 1925 and 1926 winter seasons and produced a number of oil paintings depicting the lowcountry scenery while he was in residency.
