Born in Brooklyn, New York, Joseph Raffael has been using the realm of water in his paintings and watercolors for over twenty-five years. A graduate of the Yale School of Fine Arts, where he studied with Josef Albers, Raffael taught at various institutions before moving to California in 1969. This relaxed environment allowed him to further develop his artistic style as he turned to nature for his subject matter. Raffael has long painted from photographs, particularly images of water, fish and fauna. His use of photographs, however, is not an attempt at realism. It is an attempt to better capture the appearance and movement of light on his aquatic subjects. Exchange was purchased from an exhibition of his work at the Gibbes in 1985, and his work was also on view in the traveling exhibition WATER, held to celebrate the opening of the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston.
