A native of Savannah, Georgia, Leigh spent two seasons in 1979-1980 living with and photographing the oystering communities of South Carolina.  He was inspired by his childhood experiences and memories of this unique culture and by a fervent desire to document the rapidly vanishing lifestyle.  Leigh’s photographs vividly reveal the solitary dedication of the oysterman, and the magnificent rivers and marshes of the Lowcountry.
