Contemporary artist Stacy Lynn Waddell uses mixed media techniques to create works that explore the intersection between real and imagined realities of American history and culture. Waddell received her MFA from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2007. Her work has been exhibited nationally, including exhibitions at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, Winston Salem, North Carolina; Project Row Houses, Houston; and On Stellar Rays Gallery, New York. She was named a finalist for The Factor Prize for Southern Art in 2008, a prize awarded annually by the Gibbes Museum of Art.
Manifest references the cargo carried by a vessel. In this case, cargo refers not only to tangible objects, but also to the ideas and cultural heritage of passengers. Waddell created Manifest by branding each paper pane. The singed faces, objects, and letters that emerge through this process are an investigation of the inner conflict experienced in negotiating African American cultural history and heritage with personal identity.
