Internationally recognized for his paintings, architectural collages, and sculptural works, Robert Courtright was a native of Sumter, South Carolina.  He studied in New York at the New School for Social Research and the Art Students League, and lived much of his life overseas. Courtright moved to Rome in 1953, and began creating collages like San Antonio, Piacenze, using found paper and printed text. In the 1970s, his architectural collage work evolved into a series of non-representational grid constructions, and later Courtright began to experiment with sculptural masks using a variety of media. Courtright’s work  is represented in major museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art,  Phillips Collection, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
