Edmund Yaghjian was born in Armenia, in 1905. He immigrated with his family to Providence, Rhode Island, in 1907. At age twenty-one Yaghjian entered the Rhode Island School of Design. He moved to New York in 1930 where he studied under John Sloan and Stuart Davis at the Art Students League. In 1945, Yaghjian was named the first head of the Art Department at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. Throughout his career, Yaghjian painted his surroundings, focusing on everyday landscapes, but his style continually shifted from realism to stylized abstraction, to nonobjective work.
