A Massachusetts native, John McWilliams received his M.F.A. from the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1969, he moved to Atlanta to head the photography program at Georgia State University. Once in the South, he began to photograph the land, visually portraying its romantic and ironic nature. McWilliams places emphasis on the traces of the former inhabitants of the landscapes he photographs. Included in a number of national and international solo and group exhibitions, McWilliams is also the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship as well as a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship.
