Born in Endicott, New York, Linda Fantuzzo’s formal art education began when she enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1968. In 1971-72, she studied in Europe and North Africa before returning to complete her studies the following year. Fantuzzo’s early work consists of abstract images made from metal. She began to paint landscapes in the late 1970s, which eventually led her to still-life’s, or more aptly titled “studio scapes.” Her evolving style led her to begin an investigation of classical painting techniques, which has further developed her painting style.
Still Life with Open Book demonstrates Fantuzzo’s elevation of mundane objects to monumental proportions, creating a new context among the relationship of the objects. Her skill with light and her use of warm undertones creates a richness of color that resonates throughout her compositions. Still Life with Open Book was purchased from the one-person exhibition Linda Fantuzzo: Paintings held at the Gibbes Museum of Art in 1992.
