Christo was born in Bulgaria and trained at the Fine Arts Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria and the Vienna Fine Arts Academy. For over forty years he collaborated with his late wife  Jeanne-Claude on elaborate, large-scale art projects. Though their projects take years or even decades to plan, the projects are temporary, generally remaining intact for a few weeks. Christo and Jeanne-Claude work with fabric to wrap or drape objects, structures and even islands. In 2005 the couple completed a project in New York City’s Central Park called The Gates. Twenty-six years in the making, the project involved installing 7,503 gates along 23 miles of walkways through Central Park. On view for sixteen days, the gates stood sixteen feet tall and were draped with saffron-colored fabric. Christo and Jeanne-Claude fund their art projects solely through the sale of Christo’s prints, models and preparatory drawings, such as Texas Mastaba.
